next time I go to an event, I'm going to make my VCF in a QR code be my iphone wallpaper with the email adress on it, and tell people, I don't have a card, but if you take a picture of my phone and send it to this email adress, you'll get all my contact info emailed back to you immediately in an importable format. what an awesome little idea.

Isn't this getting away somewhat from the point of a QR code? I mean, the code itself contains the info, so why go through the whole nonsense with taking a picture and emailing it? (especially via a third party who could be snagging all the info for their own purposes).

Yes, I know not all phones have decoders yet, but somehow this lacks the elegance of "Here's my card".

But it has the elegance of "click click, now I've got your contact info saved on my phone" as opposed to "here's my card, good luck taking the time to enter all this." maybe QR codes on biz cards is what we really need.

QR codes on business cards is definitely a good idea.

The main reason I wrote snapmyinfo this way is that it makes the code a lot more useful. The primary barrier to QRcode adoption, I believe, is the lack of decoding software on phones. This way, you can be confident that anyone with a cameraphone and email can use your code (more incentive to actually use it).

There are a few reasons for using the GUID in the QRcode instead of embedding the data directly. First, the resulting code can be small enough to be scaled up to be easily decoded with regular camera phones. Embedding all the data leads to denser codes with smaller feature sizes that require macro lenses or *really* good pictures to decode. The second reason is that it means that you can alter your contact information at any time and the QRcode remains valid.

I wrote it this way to solve a problem that I always have, I tend to always forget my business cards. http://mikepk.com/2009/10/help-me-test-snapmyinfo/ I also tend to collect paper cards, and they end up stacking up on my desk. Having them in electronic form makes it a lot more likely that I'll actually act on them.

Also this works with more than just emailed pictures. It's also designed to work with installed phone barcode readers too. The hope is that if enough people use this, they would want to download and run a barcode scanner. Using the scanner and an account on snapmyinfo the steps are further shortened to 'click', and then saving the vcard.

Im also working on google contacts integration. So if you use Google Contacts, the process would be even shorter, *click* and the contact would appear in your google contacts.

I also believe that adding them to the backs of business cards could be really useful too. QRcodes are a really interesting bridge between the real world and the online world.
